What is a Otoplasty?

Cosmetic Surgery

Ear Surgery

Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning, ear surgery, or ear correction surgery, is a cosmetic procedure for those who desire for their ears to be closer to the head by undergoing ear reshaping surgery. For irregularities, it can make them less prominent if the protruding ears are more than 2 centimetres. This is a standard distance from the top of the head. But ears that stick out more than this can be a visual annoyance. Some people opt for this plastic surgery to correct the damage or the ear shape, while others choose it to make their ears appear better.

Several benefits include:

  • Improved appearance
  • Proportioned ears
  • Permanent result
  • Minimal scarring

The many types

Ear Pinning Surgery

Shapes the outer ear angle by bending the cartilage and skin to meld against the side of your head.

Ear Reduction Surgery

Makes large, protruding ears smaller for a more balanced look.

Ear Augmentation

It involves cartilage grafts to augment an ear or change its contours.

Earlobe Surgery

Earlobe reshaping or reducing earlobe size.

Reconstructive Surgery

Corrects deformities or injuries, such as after an accident or birth defects.

Consultation

It is preferable to begin with a consultation in which expectations regarding the procedure, necessary preparations, and actions to be taken prior to, during, and following the surgery are established.

The procedure
Perfectly Shaped Ears
How does ear surgery work?

This ear reshaping surgery involves the removal of skin from the back of the ears, after which the ear cartilage is moulded. They are able to rotate the cartilage, which changes how the ear sits against the head. The ears are sutured in this new position, and the sutures are hidden in natural folds in the large creases behind the ear.

To correct issues such as damaged or elongated earlobes, a separate procedure known as earlobe repair is done. This is a means of removing irrelevant tissue or, if needed, fixing piercing and stretcher damage. The wound is then sutured with fine stitches.

Scarless Ear Perfection
What is incisionless ear surgery in otoplasty?

Incisionless otoplasty provides present-day methods to reshape or move the ears without cutting the skin. The anchor-like sutures used in the earfold, unfortunately, are not permanent, and the unique stitches are just placed to hold the new position and ear shape. This procedure is generally scarless and results in a quick recovery time.

Quick Ear Transformation
How long does this cosmetic surgery take?

If you have the procedure performed on you, it can take about one to two hours, depending on what you need. The more complex procedures may require a general anaesthetic and take a bit longer, but the majority are done with a local anaesthetic and are rather quick.

Tailored Ear Solutions
Is otoplasty necessary in all cases?

Not always. For a few ear abnormalities, time alone will heal. The ideal time to have ear surgery is between ages 5 and 6, when the growth of the ears is nearly complete.

This is the youngest age at which the surgery is recommended, but it can be done at any time after this. Ear moulding or splinting, a non-surgical procedure, can work well if started in the first 2–3 weeks of life.

Comfortable Ear Transformation
How painful is otoplasty?

Although the pain during otoplasty is almost non-existent thanks to the effective local anaesthesia, otoplasty patients should be warned to expect some discomfort afterwards for a few days before full recovery. The more you know what to expect in recovery and what kind of pain is the norm for this surgery, the better you can set expectations and be able to have a smoother recovery. After all, with proper post-surgery care, the ears heal very well.

Am I suitable
Is Otoplasty good for me?
  • Another factor to consider when deciding on an ear correction cosmetic procedure is your overall health. As with any surgical procedure, otoplasty involves a period of post-operative healing. Therefore, you should generally be in good health and have any preexisting medical conditions controlled. Since well-managed diabetes might approve you as a candidate, out-of-control diabetes might make you ineligible. In the case of any medical question, a cosmetic surgeon’s approval will be needed to certify that you are fit for surgery.
  • Smokers should stop smoking several months before surgery and refrain from smoking or being exposed to secondhand smoke during recovery to allow optimal healing of the surgical sites. The otoplasty procedure is generally performed after the ears have fully formed, usually about four or five years of age. The surgery is most often performed in children between the ages of four and fourteen; however, there is no age limit as it is also done on adults who have been self-conscious of their ears for years.
The risks
Can a risk be prevented?
  • Like any major surgery, otoplasty also carries risks for bleeding, infection, and reactions to anaesthesia. Rarely, permanent scarring may develop, although much of the incision is hidden behind or within the ear crease. In some cases, there may be asymmetry in the placement of the ears, as differences in healing lead to one ear being much more pinned back than the other. Repositioning can cause temporary skin sensation changes or, in very rare cases, permanent ones in the affected areas.
  • One may develop allergic reactions to the surgical materials used, and the stitches may need removal if they cause inflammation of the skin, which in some cases may require additional surgery to correct. The ear pinning of the patient’s cartilage and skin can be overcorrected, resulting in extremely pinned-back and unnatural ear contours that can be reversed or corrected.
  • Smoking status should also be taken into account, as smokers, recent stop-smoking quitters, and those exposed to secondhand smoke frequently experience problems with the healing of surgical wounds and can suffer complications including infection, excess scarring, and worsening of skin colour.
  • To prevent any complications, choose the expert surgeons during your initial consultation and discuss your medical history and all your realistic expectations to achieve natural-looking results.
