What is a Milia Removal?

Milk Spots

What does milia removal treatment do?

Milia are the small hard bumps found on the skin, often appearing like a white or yellow cyst. Most common on the face and around the eyes, cheeks but can be found anywhere else along the body. These bumps are keratin-filled and develop as the dead skin cells build up below the surface of the skin.

We do not know all of the reasons for developing milia, though there are likely multiple factors involved. Overexposure to mild rays in the skin and long-term use of steroid creams can cause stretch picks on these areas. However, the incidence of milia appears to increase with age; many cases seen in middle-aged women and even newborn babies, indicating this isn’t just an age-related condition).

Although milia are generally harmless and often resolve on their own, many people decide to treat them for cosmetic purposes in order to improve the appearance or texture of their skin. Milia extractions are geared towards gently removing the little white hard balls that crop up anywhere on the skin, but most commonly around the eye and cheeks. This treatment brightens up the skin and prevents it from forming new milia.

Several benefits include:

  • Clear skin
  • Boosted confidence
  • Reduced recurrence
  • Smooth skin

The many types

Neonatal Milia

Also referred to as baby acne, these small white bumps are due to immature sweat glands. It is a common condition and it disappears on its own without any treatment.

Primary Milia

Children and adults may both develop primary milia without an exact cause. It tends to be transient in children and more persistent or permanent in adults.

Secondary Milia

Secondary milia appear due to the damage suffered by the skin, either by sun exposure, injury or excessive use of cosmetics.

Multiple Eruptive Milia

Multiple eruptive milia  is a less common type of milia grouped in clusters, as the name suggests, which tend to affect larger areas of skin such as face and upper arms and upper body etc.

Milia en Plaque

Milia en plaque is an uncommon type that grows on red patches of skin and consists of raised, plaque-like appearance.

The procedure
Different Methods For Removing Milia
How does milia removal work?

Milia can be removed from the skin in a number of different way, depending on how big the cyst is and just how many are clustered together.

Manual Extraction

A dermatologist will make a small incision in the milia over it with scalpel or needle and use a comedone extractor or very light forceps to remove the cyst.

Cryotherapy

This can be done by using liquid nitrogen to freeze the milia. The cyst is destroyed by the cold, it deflates and drops off to expose new clear skin beneath.

Laser Treatment

A concentrated laser beam is used to erase the milia, without harming the nearby skin. This causes the cyst to degrade, making it very easy to remove.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peel with salicylic or glycolic acid exfoliant helps reduce the thickness of the skin. This helps your body slough off the dead skin from under milia and prompts new, healthy skin production.

Duration Of The Treatment
How long does the milia removal procedure take?

It typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes for the average treatment session.–

An average treatment session usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes to complete.

Removing Milia At Home
Why is milia removal at home a bad idea?

While it may be tempting to prick milia cysts on your own, know that doing so can lead to scarring, infection and inflammation. However, attempting to do-it-yourself is not advised due to the risk of infection and potentially making a scar. At our clinical facility, effective milia removal treatments are done by expert dermatologists that provide patients with safe and effective treatments.

Personalised Treatment Plan
How many sessions will I need?

Expert dermatologists will assess your skin carefully, and then a personalised treatment plan will be made. A treatment plan will include the number of sessions and whether any follow-ups are needed before the start of the treatment.

Managing Pain And Discomfort
Is milia removal painful?

Usually, depending on how it was removed, some redness, swelling and tenderness is seen in the area where removal happened. These are normal healing process and will generally resolve after a few days to weeks.
