What is a Lipoma?

Effortless Lipoma Care

What does it do?

A lipoma is a non-cancerous, benign tumours that forms under the skin. Most are generally harmless, but they can cause pain if compressed or interfere with movement. While doctors do not know the exact cause of lipoma formation, they believe that it may have a genetic factor and can grow as tissue from small traumas to the skin. They can be found in places like the back, neck, arms or legs.

Our talented surgeons at the Harley Street Skin Clinic can remove them for you whether it is because they are uncomfortable or just for cosmetic reasons. Our goal is to address all of the above and minimise scarring, provide comfort and ease with both therapies for liposuction on larger lipomas or direct surgical excision approach in smaller ones.

Several benefits include:

  • Improved comfort
  • Enhanced appearance
  • Minimize recurrence
  • Quick Recovery

The many types

Conventional Lipoma

>Conventional lipomas is the most common type, consisting of normal fat cells that are typically beneath the skin.

Fibrolipoma

This type is firmer because it has a mixture of fat and fibrous tissue.

Angiolipoma

This type contains fat and blood vessels, so it may feel uncomfortable sometimes.

Spindle Cell Lipoma

A spindle-shaped cell found on the neck or back.

Pleomorphic Lipoma

Often found in older adults. They are large fat cells of several different sizes.

Hibernoma

A rare kind composed of brown fat that is most often present around the upper back or thighs.

The procedure
Lipoma Removal Process
How does lipoma removal surgery work?

Most lipomas are simply removed by making a small incision in the skin and extracting out the mass. The surgeon applies local anesthesia to numb the area, and then attaches it with sutures enclosed by a bandage. Lipomas do not tend to recur after they are surgically excised.

Advanced Removal Options
What methods are available?

Lipomas are removed through a minor surgical procedure via a relatively simple surgical procedure where the growth is excised whole. If there are multiple or very large lipomas to be removed it may make more sense for the specialist to propose surgery combined with liposuction in order so that fat is taken out and scarring is minimized. For larger and multiple lipomas, laser lipolysis is also available which consists of destroying overgrowth of fat cells using a nanometer wavelength before surgical removal.

Duration Of The Treatment
How long does the procedure take?

Large or complex lipomas still need to be excised under general anesthesia, whereas small ones can usually be removed under local anesthesia. The surgery only takes about 30 to 60 minutes, though time will certainly be added due the administration of general anaesthesia.

Size For Lipoma Surgery
At what size should I get a lipoma removed?

Lipomas can be easily removed as an outpatient procedure. Small lipomas less than 10 cm can generally be removed under local anesthetic with a short recovery.

Comfort-Focused Removal
How painful is lipoma removal surgery?

Your comfort is maintained by an injection of a local anesthesia into the area where lipoma will be removed. For comfort afterward, cold compresses often help. Avoid any form of heavy exertion to safely recover.
