What is a hair transplant?

Hair Restoration

Hair grafting

Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that moves hair follicles from one part of the body called the ‘donor site’ to a bald or balding part of the body known as the’recipient site’. Really, what the surgeon will do in hair transplant procedures is harvest hair, usually from the back or side of the head, and transplant it to a bald area. Usually, these hair transplant procedures are carried out under local anaesthesia in a surgical suite.

Pattern baldness is a form of hair loss that is genetic in nature in most cases. Diet, stress, infection, sickness, hormonal imbalances, medications, etc. It can affect your confidence and deprive you of all happiness. A boost of self-confidence after hair loss can enhance your work and quality of life.

Hair transplant surgery might be the answer if other treatments fail. It can help you regrow your hair, especially in bald or thinning areas. Here at The Harley Street Skin Clinic, our hair transplant surgeons can help you achieve superior results that restore your confidence and make you YOU again. Hair transplant surgery is often the best approach for those who have already tried other treatments such as PRP hair that haven’t given them the results they were hopihg for.

Several benefits include:

  • Fuller hair
  • Thicker strands
  • Natural looking
  • Permanent results
  • Confidence boosting

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) vs. follicular unit extraction (FUE)

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

  • A strip of hair from the back of the head is surgically extracted.
  • Leaves a clearly visible linear scar at the donor site, makes it more noticeable with short hair but also can be concealed by long hairs.
  • Recovery times vary; the linear and minimal scarring may extend that slightly compared to FUE hair transplant.
  • Perfect for large total hair restoration in one treatment but leaves a visible linear scarring which can be easily covered with long hairs.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

  • Individual hair follicles are removed from the donor site.
  • Scars may be very small, scattered, less noticeable, and dot-like which can all be more easily covered by short hairstyles.
  • Fast recovery in most cases due to the extraction being less invasive, which makes for smaller wounds to care for.
  • Ideal for minimising visible scarring, best utilised in smaller sessions or dependent on donor hair reserves.

1
Consultation

It is preferable to begin with a consultation in which expectations regarding the procedure, necessary preparations, and actions to be taken prior to, during, and following the surgery are established.

2
Preparation

Hair transplants involve collecting healthy hair follicles from a location of the scalp where there is full abundant hair, normally at the back or sides and implanting them in regions with no hair. The transplanted follicles grow naturally in their new environment revitalising hair growth to the areas treated.

3
Surgery

Your scalp may be sore following your hair transplant. Typically, hair falls out after a few weeks but starts growing in months with 60 percent growth by 6 to 9 months.

4
Recovery

Although recovery times may differ from person to person, most patients are back to their regular activities in two weeks or less.

The procedure
Precision Hair Renewal
How does hair transplantation work?

Once your scalp is cleansed, the surgeon applies a small needle to an area of the head with local anaesthesia. There are 2 ways to harvest follicles for hair transplantation:

The FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

  • Using a scalpel, the surgeon removes hair-bearing skin from the back of the head in an area cards would cover.
  • After that, the area is sutured.
  • A strip of scalp is cut into small sections with the aid of a magnifying lens and sharp scalpel. The portions assist in natural hair growth following implantation.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

  • Many tiny punch incisions are made in the back of the head, and healthy hair follicles are extracted from there.
  • The surgeon then makes small slits with a blade or needle in the area of the implant and places each hair delicately into these holes.

After the Procedure

  • In a single session, the surgeon may transplant hundreds or even thousands of hairs.
  • You will have grafts, gauze, or bandages placed over your scalp for a few days following the procedure.
Gradual Hair Restoration
How long does the hair transplant treatment take?

A hair transplant surgery can take 4 or more hours to complete and stitches are removed ten days after. You may need between one to four sessions (depending on the hair transplant approach) in order to achieve the head of hair that you desire and to allow time between each session so your scalp can effectively heal.

Comfortable Hair Revival
Does a hair transplant hurt?

Since a hair transplant is a surgical procedure, you may feel little discomfort at times. Local anaesthetic is administered at the beginning so that surgery takes place without any pain. The first injection may sting a little, but the surgery itself should be painless.

You are awake during the procedure and experience everything. It is uncomfortable as you will feel some pulling and tugging but the local anaesthetic works well at managing any pain.

The treatment is painless, but your scalp might be a little sore after the anaesthetic has worn off. The scalp is traumatised somewhat during surgery, and this causes redness and swelling of the skin for a few days. This will be especially true if you had a large number of grafts placed, though they tend to heal within 1 – 2 weeks.

If you experience some pain and discomfort after surgery, prescription medicines may be given to relieve the pain, reduce swelling, and to prevent infection. Often this minimal discomfort subsides after a few days. After that your new hair will begin to grow in a few months.

Lifetime Hair Growth
How long does the result of hair transplant last?

The majority of the hairs transplanted will have fallen out at one month following hair transplant. After which, about three months later, new hair will begin to grow. By six months, the transplanted hair takes on its natural appearance and new hairs will continue to grow for a lifetime. The back where the hair was harvested shrinks to an almost invisible stitch line.

Enhanced Hair Solutions
Can you combine hair transplant with other hair loss treatments?

Hair transplants paired with other hair loss treatments (such as PRP hair) will increase the hair density. Hair loss medication like Minoxidil or finasteride can also stop further hair loss as well as strengthen your existing hairs. However, a hair transplant surgeon should be consulted to determine if any combination is appropriate.

Natural, thick, and healthy hair can be achieved with personalised hair transplants and treatments from Harley Street Skin Clinic experts.

The essentials
What do you need to know before the treatment?

Four Weeks Before Surgery

  • Have all your health background and needed blood tests at our clinic.
  • Tell us about any new medical updates or long-term health condition changes after a visit to your doctor. Any information that has transpired over the last four weeks would need to be disclosed to us prior to surgery.
  • Avoid Beta-blockers and other medications.

Three Weeks Before Surgery

  • Do not take Vitamin E and Fish Oil.
  • Discontinue all vitamin supplements and over-the-counter medications.
  • If you live far, make accommodations in a hotel the evening before surgery. Expect to spend one night after surgery and have a friend or family member drive you home.
  • Do not drive the first 24 hours after surgery.

One Day Before Surgery

  • Discontinue Ibuprofen and Naproxen 24 hrs prior to surgery.

The Day of Surgery

  • Shampoo your hair.
  • No exercise.
  • No perfumes or cologne.
  • Have a full meal.
  • Use the pre-op medicine we had you take.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing that you don’t have to pull over your head, so as not to harm the freshly installed grafts.

What is the best treatment plan for post-op care?

  • Use saline spray on your scalp regularly as this will aid in speeding up healing time and minimising infection risks.
  • If you can, take some rest for your body to gain energy.
  • Swimming, alcohol, cigarettes, and high-impact activities are strictly forbidden.
  • Use saline sprays for hydrating your scalp.
  • Use your fingertips to comb wet hair, gently untangle the wound as needed (to avoid bleeding or irritation).
  • Avoid using extremely tight caps and scarves, as it will prevent the hair from growing back.
  • Spray with saline twice a day before washing the hair to keep it clean and itch-free.
  • Skip hair dryers and power showers. Both of these can damage new hair follicles.
  • Do not lift anything heavy for four weeks to prevent reopening the incision.
  • Do not play sports or participate in strenuous exercise for one month.
  • Regularly wash your hands, and do not touch the scalp because of the risk of getting infected.
  • You want to gently wash your hair with a little shampoo.
  • Washing Method:
  • Fill a bowl with tepid water.
  • Now put a spoonful of gentle shampoo and mix till it’s soapy.
  • You can simply pour the solution over the areas where you have transplanted and donated hairs, from a cup or jug.
  • Blot the grafts gently and shampoo each side of the suture line.
  • Pour enough water to rinse the hair and let it naturally dry or blow-dry gently with a clean towel.

What lifestyle changes do I need to follow for optimal hair transplant results?

  • Try to include foods with a high content of vitamins and minerals such as leafy greens, fruits, nuts along with lean proteins.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day. Hydration is great for your scalp and keeps your hair follicles healthy.
  • Use gentle, sulphate-free shampoo & conditioner.
  • Carefully wash hair, do not rub too much and pat dry with a soft towel.
  • Rub your scalp lightly utilising the tips of the fingers. It enhances blood circulation in your scalp and also does miracles if you want to relax.
  • You also need to be sure that you give your hair a break from heat. Styling tools like blow dryers and straighteners.
  • Avoid too high heat and allow your hair to dry independently from the air.
  • Engage in stress-relieving activities, such as yoga or meditation, and practice breathing techniques. When there is less stress, your hair can grow stronger and better.
  • Sleep well and sleep enough: 7-9 hours a night. Your hair follicles recover and renew themselves as you sleep.
  • Select activities you delight in, such as strolling, running, or those that require exercise.
  • You may also discuss with your hair transplant doctor an option for supplements like biotin, vitamin D, or omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Attend your follow-up appointments and ask any questions.

Am I suitable
Is Hair Transplant good for me?
  • For our hair restoration surgery, age and gender are often not an issue. They are still useful for people over 70 and those with baldness in their thirties. Even younger patients could be alright, still it’s better to be careful. This may apply to both men and women who have patterns of hair loss.
  • The ideal candidates for hair restoration procedure are those who have healthy hairs present on the sides and back of their head from where we harvest the grafts. It’s better to get treatment before hair loss becomes irreversible, while existing hairs can still help camouflage initial stages of the process.
The risks
Can a risk be prevented?
  • Hair transplant can be regarded as a safe surgery if performed by experienced board certified hair transplant surgeons. Of course, everyone’s body is different and heals differently so results may vary slightly from patient to patient.
  • As with any surgery, it does come along with some potential risks. Infections can occur on the reduced scalp because it may create tension by pulling in surrounding tissue, this stretch-back causes bleeding or wider scars.
  • While transplanting, potentially some grafts may not survive and establish roots. However, as a normal phase of the process for hair to fall out before growing again, although in some cases it is possible that skin plugs do not take root and then additional surgery has to be done. They are also small bumps where transplants have been placed that can be hidden in other hair.
  • If there is ongoing shedding of hair after surgery, it can lead to an awkward patchy look especially when the new transplant hairs are situated close or surrounded by thinning skin. In this type of scenario, more surgery is essentially required for the purpose.
