Is cherry angioma treatment necessary?
Cherry angiomas, also known as Campbell de Morgan spots or senile angioma, are benign skin growths of small blood vessels to form red or purple spots on the skin. They are common skin growths, especially in individuals older than 30 years of age, and can develop anywhere on the body, including the torso, arms, or face. Though they are harmless, some people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or if the growth is irritated or bleeds.
The question is, does that need to be removed? Not really, unless the angioma is uncomfortable, or in a prominent area that’s bothering you. Cherry angioma removal is typically very safe, but there are some risks associated with any procedure. One of the risks can be the scarring. When the skin does heal, it can sometimes do so with a small scar, particularly when the healing process itself has not gone exactly according to plan. Infection is also a risk, but only if follow-up care directions are not followed exactly right.
Other risks are skin thinning or colour changes, where the area can be darker or lighter than the surrounding skin. A little bit of bleeding can occur during or after the procedure, especially if the angioma is huge or in a sensitive area. Finally, it is possible for the cherry angioma to come back after being removed.
