What is Breast Reduction?

Shape Enhancement

Size reduction

Breast reduction, also called mammaplasty, is a surgery that removes extra fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts to make them smaller and more comfortable. The surgery can address back, shoulder, and neck pain, headaches, poor posture, or difficulties breathing while sleeping. It even solves other issues like deep shoulder grooves from bra straps, numbness and tingling, skin rashes, or skin irritation under the breasts.

While some choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery to increase the size of their breasts, most people might need breast reduction surgery for comfort and beauty reasons. Having extremely large breasts can make it difficult to find clothing that fits well, as can doing things like exercising that can affect self-confidence over time. For a higher level of balance and symmetry in your figure, this surgery can do wonders for enhancing not just the look but also the feel of your breasts. It also helps men with gynecomastia, a condition where the male breast size is enlarged due to excess breast tissue.

In addition, breast reduction surgery can be paired with breast uplift surgery, which can effectively reduce the size of the breasts and raise them into a higher position so that they not only look better but also feel better.

Benefits:

  • Pain relief
  • Improved posture
  • Ease of breathing
  • Increase mobility
  • Balance and symmetry
  • Gynecomastia treatment

The many types

Liposuction for Breast Reduction

A faster and less-invasive surgery that takes out excess fat and tissue without leaving a lot of scars. Maintain the breast shape and nipple position. Ideal for patients who are looking for mild size reduction with a minimal to moderate amount of fatty tissue and elastic skin. Less scarring, faster recovery process.

Vertical (Lollipop) Breast Reduction

Two incisions: one around the areola and another from the areola to the breast crease. Lifts and reshapes, decreasing breast size. Suitable for mild to moderate size reduction as well as extensive reshaping and lifting. Mild scars, generally hidden at the base of the breast.

Inverted T (Anchor) Breast Reduction

Additional incisions are made in the breast crease using the vertical method. It enables more breast tissue removal and reshaping. With more severe sagging or who require a larger reduction. There is a greater chance of more scarring than breast augmentation surgery, which is hidden below the breast and requires a longer recovery.

The procedure
Customized Breast Reduction
Which breast reduction method is the best?

The appropriate method for breast reduction will vary depending on a person’s breast shape and size, the kind of tissue being taken out, and how they would like the breasts to look afterward.

A physical examination from a cosmetic surgeon is necessary to determine the best method. In your consultation, the surgeon will discuss the size or shape of your breasts, the type of breast tissue involved, how much reduction you desire, whether you want to change the size or shape of your areola and nipple, address any asymmetry between both breasts, and what breast reduction techniques will suit you best with respect to achieving your expectations for reshaping and breast lifting.

Reshaped For Comfort
How is a breast reduction done?

Breast reduction surgery will be done under general anaesthesia, so you will be asleep. The reconstructive surgery is typically performed over three to five hours.

The plastic surgeon will create an incision in a keyhole shape around the nip and down on your breast. They will eliminate the excess skin, tissue, and fat, change the levels of the nipple, and close the cuts. Tubes may be used to help drain away any fluid, and your cuts will be stitched and a dressing will be placed. Your surgeon may also recommend wearing a surgical bra after surgery.

It is not just one treatment procedure, regular maintenance is required to ensure long-term benefits. While a series of initial treatments is the norm, a patient needs to continue to come in every few months for maintenance sessions that will keep their skin youthful and rejuvenated.

A qualified mesotherapy provider will be able to advise you on the best treatment plan and how many sessions are likely to be needed before you see results for your individual needs and goals.

Managed Post-Op Comfort
Is breast reduction surgery painful?

During this surgical procedure, you will be anesthetized. This can cause some muscle aches and soreness in the post-op healing period, which may last for 2–3 days. Your surgeon will prescribe you pain medication and perhaps suggest ice packs to apply for the first couple of days to decrease inflammation and reduce discomfort. If self-help measures do not improve the pain, or if the pain continues for a long time, please consult your care team immediately.

Male Chest Reshaping
Can men get breast reduction surgery?

Men also have a surgery option where they can get a breast reduction and have less breast tissue, which gives off the appearance of a bigger breast due to a condition called gynecomastia. It may be due to hormonal fluctuation, medication, or could indicate an underlying health condition.

This is done by making an incision around the nipple or in other parts of the chest through which, during surgery, the extra breast tissue and fat will be extracted. Making the breast look flatter and manlier. The difficulty of the procedure will depend on both the amount of excess tissue to be removed and the specific gynecomastia condition.

Breast reduction surgery for men not only makes them look much better and more manly, but also makes them feel good about themselves.

Timing For Motherhood
When is the best time to have breast reduction surgery—before or after having kids?

Changes in breast size after pregnancy and childbirth is normal, that is the reason why many patients who plan to have children after undergoing breast reduction surgery should talk with their surgeon.

If you are planning to have a baby after the surgery, breast reduction might hinder your ability to breastfeed. Breast tissues removed might affect milk production if the nerves and milk ducts are severely affected during the operation. You should be asking these things during your consultation.

Heavy pain medicines in the first week after surgery are needed to manage pain.

Swelling and bruising are at their peak and may continue for a few weeks.

  • It is important to drain the blood and fluid by placing a drainage tube.
  • A surgical bra or compression garment should be worn for swelling and muscle support.

  • You can wear a soft support bra, but the compression garment must be on for at least 12 hours a day.
  • Walking is allowable, but not lifting.

Take pain medication, but with an adjusted dose.

  • You can start with your work in the fourth week.

Am I suitable
Who is the ideal candidate?

If you suffer from physical discomfort like back, shoulder, and neck pain due to the size of your breasts, then you are a good candidate for breast reduction surgery. Additionally, if you suffer from any kind of skin irritation, rashes, or infections under your breasts, this cosmetic surgery could be the answer for you. It is also good for people who struggle with getting involved in physical activities or exercise because of the size of their breasts. If your chest frequently causes emotional distress or you feel self-conscious, or if, due to its size, you struggle to find clothes that fit properly, breast reduction is definitely for you. You should also be at a healthy weight and a nonsmoker or willing to quit smoking both before and after the breast surgery to facilitate healing. It is important to manage expectations in terms of what the surgery can do and potential risks.

The risks
Can a risk be prevented?

Breast reduction combines the inherent risks of major surgery, such as bleeding, infection, and adverse reactions to anaesthesia. However, also understand that there are temporary bruising and scarring risks. It can make it really hard or, in some cases, impossible to breastfeed later on. Perhaps your breasts may appear a different size or shape or look somewhat distorted in appearance, making some people less satisfied with the outcome. In select cases, the nipple or areola may be lost, or the sensation in these regions may decrease. To minimise any risk and revision surgery from breast reduction, ensure to choose a certified plastic surgeon.
