What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast Implant

What does breast augmentation do?

Breast augmentation surgery, often called a “boob job,” is achieved by placing implants, either filled with saline or silicone gel, underneath the breast tissue and chest or chest wall muscle.

Breast-enlargement surgery is a very personal choice for any woman. Others desire to enhance how they look in their clothes and improve relative body proportions. Others are trying to revert their breasts back by restoring volume lost after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or massive weight loss. It can provide balance for women who have uneven breasts. Furthermore, it is a critical choice for those doing breast reconstruction after a mastectomy or previous breast surgery.

Benefits:

  • Increased breast size and shape.
  • Improved body proportions.
  • Increased confidence and self-esteem.
  • Correction of an uneven breast.

The many types

Saline Breast Implants

These contain sterile salt water. They are empty inserts that get filled once in place.

Silicone Breast Implants

They are pre-filled into a silicone shell that is then inserted.

Gummy Bear Implants

They are made from a thick silicone gel and will hold their shape even once the shell has broken.

Round Implants

These are round shaped and give a plump look

Teardrop Breast Implants

They are bigger and typically shaped breast muscle, much like a natural breast when filled

The procedure
Customized Breast Enhancement
How does breast implant work?

Breast augmentation surgery entails a surgical procedure with the following steps:

  • Anaesthesia: General anaesthesia will be provided based on your choice and medical advice.
  • Incision: The incisions can be in the fold underneath your breast, along the coloured region of skin around it (areola), or through an armpit.
  • Placement: A breast implant is inserted into the natural breast tissue or under your chest muscle, depending on which breast implant size you choose.
  • Closure: Sutures are used to close the incisions. For the best recovery possible, follow your post-operative care instructions.
Quick Confidence Boost
How long does breast augmentation surgery take?

This varies according to the type of cosmetic procedure and what has been pre-planned with your cosmetic surgeon. On average, the breast enlargement procedure is done in an hour to an hour and a half, or approximately 30-45 minutes per breast implant. You will stay overnight in a hospital for rest and recovery from the anaesthesia.

Long-Lasting Confidence
How long does breast implant last?

Breast implants are built to last, and they should be good for many years. Adjustments in your body over time, such as weight gain, weight loss, and lifestyle options, also play a significant role in determining how long the breast enlargement surgery results will continue to be satisfactory.

Most women have at least 10 years, and often longer, of satisfaction from their breast implants; however, individual experiences may vary. It is crucial to speak about these with a board-certified plastic surgeon to achieve the best possible results.

Screening With Care
Do breast implants affect cancer screening?

Yes. Because breast implants alter the way in which mammograms are carried out and interpreted,.

Existing breast tissue can be obscured by saline implants or saline and silicone implants together, making it difficult for mammograms to capture the entire picture. The location of the cancer can make it more difficult to pick up on a mammogram. But studies have shown mammograms miss cancer in 77.8 percent of women with breast implants vs. only 90.7 percent for those without them.

Breastfeeding Often Possible
Can I breastfeed after getting breast implants?

Breast augmentation surgery is able to impact your breast nerves and ducts, making breastfeeding more of a challenge. Breast implants placed entirely under the tissue and chest muscles do not usually affect breastfeeding to the same extent as those that are partially overlying it. Incisions made around the nipple are more likely to limit breast milk supply. If possible, discuss this with your surgeon before actually having the breast augmentation surgery.

The benefits
Fuller breast

Breast surgery procedures can improve the size and shape of your breasts for a more proportionate figure.

They replace volume that is lost due to pregnancy, weight changes or age giving a fuller more youthful appearance.

This can make your breasts more symmetrical and even.

From improved clothing fit to added comfort, your perfect breast size can significantly impact every area of your life.

Positive self-image

With higher levels of self-confidence, a majority express satisfaction with their body image after breast enlargement surgery.

The more pleased one is with how their breasts look overall, there may be fewer associated concerns and a developed sense of body confidence.

Better self-esteem may increase emotional wellness and enjoyment of life.

A good sense of fashion helps in boosting confidence and it will make you feel comfortable out there when you go social.

Better interaction

The correct breast measurement can confirm comfortable body shopping and outfit worrying.

Being confident can help you relate to those around you better, enabling strong relationships.

This can make social situations far more comfortable with a new sense of confidence and self-love for your breast appearance.

Feeling balanced in looks can also increase self-confidence and how you present yourself with confidence.

Am I suitable
Is Breast Augmentation good for me?

A good breast implant candidate is a woman who wants to improve her appearance and increase her self-esteem through major surgery. Typically, this will be a healthy person who does not have medical conditions that would make surgery or recovery difficult. Especially since it is important to have realistic expectations about the result and the risks involved.

Perfect candidates include those who feel their breasts are too small, have lost breast volume post-childbirth or breastfeeding, or have experienced excessive weight loss. Women post-mastectomy and an injury choose to also have breast augmentation.

Age is also a consideration; you should be over 18 to get breast enlargement surgery. Non-smokers, or at least willing to cease smoking before and after the operation since this can negatively affect the healing process,.

Emotional readiness is also a factor. Make the decision because you want to, not because you need to. Included in a careful examination by a board-certified plastic surgeon is consideration for whether breast augmentation will provide you with your desired aesthetic goals and whether you are well-informed before undergoing this type of cosmetic surgery procedure.

The risks
Can a risk be prevented?

Similar to any popular cosmetic surgery procedure, there will be side effects and risks. Both saline and silicone implants are considered safe for breast enlargement procedures. After undergoing breast implants, there are usual side effects like soreness, bleeding and bruising, increased nipple sensitivity, or swelling. Immediate, rare complications can include infection, wound healing problems, and hematoma (blood that collects at the surgical site).

Potential long-term complications include capsule contracture (scar tissue forming around the implant and causing hardening), breast droop or ptosis due to the weight of the implant-sized breast implants, symmastia (when the middle portion between the breasts is artificially elevated in appearance), seroma (fluid surrounding an implant, possibly a sign of infection), and a rare immune system cancer called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Symptoms of BIA-ALCL may not develop until years after the breasts were implanted, so monitoring changes such as breast size or shape, swelling, or lumps is key.

Breast implants were not intended to last a lifetime. The longer you keep them, then you are more likely to have issues. The corrections to some problems demand additional surgery, and there is also no assurance that you will like what comes out after it.

The nature of what further surgery is required in a reoperation is decided according to the complication. Other factors may result in you having one or more reoperations during your lifetime. More than one can sometimes be done in a single operation. Below are a few of the procedures that may be required:

  • Implant removal: The replacement can be with an implant or without.
  • Capsule removal (capsulectomy): This will require the removal of the scar tissue surrounding the implant.
  • Scar or wound revision: surgery to remove scar tissue
  • Drainage of hematoma: releasing the blood by using a needle, tube, or carrying through a surgical cut.
  • Breast implant repositioning: This requires the surgical reopening of your original incision in order to move said implants.
  • Biopsy or cyst removal: A needle is inserted or an incision made in order to take out a lump.

Knowing these options will be of great help when you are considering breast implants.
